Is there a way to print the header and footer on all pages? Also I have a
footer and the textboxes in it wont print, lines will but no text the
expressions are like this (below) any idea? they show up on screen as on the
footer but when printed are blank
textbox1
="Page "+str(Globals!PageNumber)+" of "+str(Globals!TotalPages)
textbox2
="Report ran on "+Globals!ExecutionTimenope, the only thing on the page right now since its a brand new report is
the header and footer and the header has a single image in it and the footer
has a line above the two text boxes of which they are 50% of the width each
and left and right aligned, no overlapping...

I am having the same problem - where the footer appears when viewing
the report, but not when printing. Could you please elaborate on how
you fixed this with margin sizes?

Tables have no inherent order. The only way to fix the order you see is
to use an ORDER BY clause in your SELECT statements. Enterprise Manager
won't do that for you - you need to write your own query. Preferably
use Query Analyzer instead because it's a much more powerful tool.
You'll need to familiarize yourself with SQL syntax first but that's
not so hard for the basic stuff. For example:
SELECT col1, col2, col3, ...
FROM your_table
ORDER BY col1 ;

You can create a clustered index but all that does is to fix the order
of data as it is stored. This doesn't guarantee that the data will
always be returned in the same order. Although in some cases it may
appear to give that effect you shouldn't rely on it.

This is NOT what David is saying.
There is absolutely no guarantee what order the rows from a table will be
returned, with a clustered index or without one. The only way to be sure
that you get the data in the order you want it is to request it to be sorted
with ORDER BY.

If you have a clustered index (or primary key) on the table, then the
physical and logical order will be the same.
But even then, a select statement without an order-by does not seem to
guarantee things will display in order. Just why not, I do not really
understand. May have to do with reuse of freed pages and order of
insertion, so the logical and physical *page* order are not the same,
irrespective of the logical and physical *row* orders.

SQL Server is free to return data in any sequence (e.g. most efficient
manner) unless the query contains ORDER BY. For example, there is a
'merry-go-round' scan feature that allows multiple concurrent queries to
'piggyback' on a scan already in progress. Once the later queries retrieve
the last row, the scan resumes at the beginning and continues until the
initially retrieved row is encountered. This could result in rows returned
in an arbitrary order.
It's good to have an understanding of the physical implementation for
performance analysis. However, you can rely only on the result described by
the SQL query.

Hope this helps.

Primary key question
Hi,
I am new to SQL 2000 and scratching my head...I am importing text files to SQL 2000 tables. How should I define the primary key in a table if the text file is :
Example 'customer invoice file'
column 1-Customer Bus Unit (Char 3)
column 2-Batch number (Char 6)
column 3-Document type (Char 1)
column 4-Invoice number (char 15)
column 5-Invoice dollar (Money)
column 6 - due date (date)
column 7 - customer name (char 35)
column 8 - customer address (char 50)
The primary key of this file is column1 + column 2 + coumn 3 + column 4. That concatnation of 4 fields make each record unique.
Should I define all 4 feilds as the primary key field? Thank you, Yanoroouh...yes...

Please bear with me...
What do you mean a staging environment?
Could you suggest a work table design? (example)|||Sure...it's a table that looks like your final table...just that it has no keys, indexes or other constraints...even make all of the columns varchar (dates, money, ect)
You can the audit the data
LIKE
SELECT * FROM myTable99 WHERE ISDATE(adatecolumn) = 0
Will show you all rows with bad dates
SELECT * FROM myTable99 WHERE ISNUMERIC(anumericcolumn) = 0
Will show you all rows with non numbers in the expected number columns
PK violations
SELECT col1, col2, col3, col4, count(*)
FROM mytable99
GROUP BY col1, col2, col3, col4
HAVING COUNT(*) > 1
Shows where you'll have a dup key
ect
You can even make sure RI is ok...
If the data passes your audit, you can either bcp/dts or bulk insert the file, or Just INSERT it from your stage table...
Clear as mud?
Let me know...|||Okay, I will try that. Thank you very much.
I may encounter another questions... I will let you know.
Yanoroo|||Brett, are you still checking?
Not only the staging the work, I tried your PK violation check and it worked beautifully.
I appriciate your help. Yanoroo|||Hey....Merry Holiday

Primary Key Constraint Violation

there could help me? I have tried couple way to get around, but still

index with ignore duplicate key on the staging table (but this would slow
the load unless the text file is ordered the same as the index which would
need to be unique clustered) and assumes that the entire row is a duplicate
if the key is.

Primary Key
In a recent course on database programming using Microsoft Access 2002. I noticed that the text entitiled New Perspectives Microsoft Access 2002 stated that a primary key could only be used once per table. But If I am not mistaken could one use the select key to select more than one primary key within a table. If I am not taking ur sentance wrongly.
There is no limitation on select statement. But defining PK is for uniquess enforcement.|||In SQL Server or MS Access, only one Primary Key can be defined on a table, although this Primary Key may be a compound key consisting of more than one column.
A SELECT list can contain as many columns as you wish, regardless of whether they are primary keys.|||you can have only one primary key per table
that part is absolutely true
your comment "could one use the select key to select more than one primary key within a table" is slightly inaccurate, but you are on the right track
yes, you can, in the Design View for the table, select more than one column and make them the primary key
there can be only one primary key, but it may be a composite key, consisting of multiple colulmns|||Not the way the definition works... primary filegroup is full?
Hi,
I'm trying to use DTS to import a text file into a table and I get an error
saying that space cannot be allocated for the file because the primary

Any ideas how to extend the primary filegroup?

It looks like during the DTS's execution an autogrow feature kicks in and
it takes some time
Check it out if you have enough available space and try to import the data

I'm trying to use DTS to import a text file into a table and I get an error
saying that space cannot be allocated for the file because the primary
filegroup is full.
Any ideas how to extend the primary filegroup?
thanksRafale
It looks like during the DTS's execution an autogrow feature kicks in and
it takes some time
Check it out if you have enough available space and try to import the data
with small tranasctions.

Looks like any one of the below 3 reasons had created this error:-
1. You have restricted the file growth
2. Transaction log (LDF) has gone high due to DTS
3. Not enough room in hard disk
The solutions for each of the above problems are:-
1. Remove the restricted growth and monitor the growth while DTS
2. Take Transaction log backup and shrink the LDF file. See Backup LOG and
DBCC SHRINKFILE commands in books online. After shrink start the

Previewing a report does not display the text fields at the correct position

Could you explain further. Do you mean fields changed order (i.e.,
Col1, Col2, Col4, Col3)? Or do you mean changed do to report borders
or page settings?

Preventing ALL text SQL Injection by removing single-quotes ?
I need to ask the user for some string (not INT) input... to
build a T-SQL "find" query in SQL Server 2000.
I do *NOT* need the user to ever search for "'"... so I'm removing the
single-quote character entirely.

Can someone give a working example where SQL INJECTION would still be
possible?Hi Susan

string, fully stripped of all single-quotes... can be used for
Injection.
I'm not saying that it can't.
I just need someone to post the actual code.
Ever wonder why no one has the code?

You are assuming a certain business rule is applied which is probably
quite rare. You may be able to provide dropdowns if your values are so
specific and remove the need to type in anything!!
The parameterised query option is generic and can cater for all
sutuations, it should also be fast.
John|||John... that wasn't the question at all.
I *DO* have a need to search for text without containing any single-quotes.
(I couldn't possible have a dropdown box with 1000 different searches in it.
)
Why not simple say "I don't know" instead of answering a totally different
question?

You don't provide us with an example of your code that builds dynamic SQL so
we can only guess as to what might or might not work. Have you considered
char(39) being mixed in somehow?
But the larger question is, what is your aversion to parameterizing your
queries? If you were truly concerned about SQL injection, that's the route
you would go. Will you feel safe if nobody here can come up with an
example? Will that mean that it can't be done? You'd learn more hanging
out in hacker's circles, if that is your approach..
So, sorry if it offends you, and I'll admit that "I don't know" of a
specific example, but the real answer to your rhetorical question is:
parameterize, then you won't need to worry about it, there are no reasons it
can't be done, only excuses.
Good Luck,

If ever in the design of the system someone has said "It will never do such

The most important thing about security is like so many things - expend your
effort where it will have most benefit.
I suggest you check your program code and ensure that no strings can
overflow buffers, that you use parameterised queries, that you check every
string not just for single quotes but also script and other HTML tags, for
code that can be evaluated to quotes, script, or html, that wherever
possible you remove as much need for free text entry as you can, do not
reflect errors verbatum back to the user - IE avoid replay attacks - do not
store data ever without sanitising it, do not show data with it being
santised (again), make everything as type safe as possible, normalise your
database properly, use maximum error and warning reporting when compiling,
use proper error handling, test the system thoroughly, try to break it, do
not accept warnings during compiles, and so on.
Add to that, use a DMZ, secure your web server, secure your database server,
enforce strong security... strong passwords,... I think you get the idea.
Now, look at your original question and ask yourself "was it responsible"?
Or do you think you can now check off the single quote character in
isolation? It is never a done task.
I suggest you re-read John's answer and references as a starter.
