Print Layout feature showing black

Today I received a Windows Update that included SQL 2005 SP2. Since
that time whenever I try to use the "Print Layout" feature in
Reporting Services, it shows nothing but black. Does anyone know of a
fix for this?Here you go: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935356/en-us
This is the new cumulative update that should fix your issue. You'll need
to follow the steps on the page to request the fix.
This is one of the bugs fixed:
50001105 After you apply SQL Server 2005 SP2, the Print Preview feature in
Reporting Services may show a solid black page.

Print Issues with Reporting Services

I developed and deployed a report using VS.net. Reporting Services gives you the option on the web page to print the report or export to another format. When choosing to print, I am unable to get the report to print in landscape mode on standard letter paper. What is the relationship between the margin properties (which seem to have no impact) on the report? the body of the report? and the printer?
The report size doesnt seem to matter (10 x 7.5 inches) tried changing margins here also
The body size doesnt seem to matter (9.75 x 7 inches) and here

Does the issue lie with
a) the printer properties
b) Reporting services
c) IE
Im stumped!!Sad

Hopefully, you are using the Sep. CTP or later, since there was a known issue earlier with landscape printing. After the report server was upgraded, I still had to manually delete the old RSClientPrint Class file on my PC, which was cached under the "Downloaded Program Fles" folder (RTM version is: 2005,90,1399,0).

Print icon not showing up in RS

Has anyone ever seen the print icon not show up in the top toolbar in
Reporting Services? Normally, the print icon shows between the refresh
button and the help button. We saw one instance where the print icon
was not showing: it was just the refresh and help button together. Does
anyone know what could cause this? Is this security related? Thanks.
JustinMy guess is the user of the PC is not in the administrator's group (local
administrators group) and the activeX control is not getting installed.

print function?

One of our user requirement is to include "Print" option to the Reporting
Manager toolbar (either inlcude in the Export to .. list or a separate
option to send the report to the printer).
Is this possible.? If possible, how? if not, what are the alternatives?
ThanksClient side printing is expected to be included in a future release. In the
current release, you can print reports from a custom app. Please see
http://www.csharphelp.com/archives3/archive545.html for a code sample.

Print button not showing in Firefox -- ReportViewer control

Hi, I'm having a problem with the ReportViewer control (Reporting Service 2005) in Firefox. Neither the print button nor the Search box are showing up, even when I explicitly set them to be visible. They are showing up fine in IE.

Anyone else had this problem?

When you look at the HTML source, it's clear why it is not showing up. The following code does not even appear in the Firefox version (most important part in bold):

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" ToolbarSpacer="true" style="display:inline;">
<tr>
<td style="width:20px;"></td>
</tr>
</table>

<div id="RptView_ctl01_ctl07" style="display:inline;font-family:Verdana;font-size:8pt;height:30px;">
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="display:inline;">
<tr>
<td height="28px"><div id="RptView_ctl01_ctl07_ctl00">

<tr>

</tr>
</table><script>
HoverImageRptView_ctl01_ctl07_ctl00_ctl00.OnNormal();
</script><table id="RptView_ctl01_ctl07_ctl00_ctl01" onmouseout="HoverImageRptView_ctl01_ctl07_ctl00_ctl01.OnNormal();" title="Print" style="display:inline;">

</tr>
</table><script>
HoverImageRptView_ctl01_ctl07_ctl00_ctl01.OnNormal();
</script>
</div></td>
</tr>

</div>

Is the "print control" IE-only?

|||I believe that the print controler is an active x controler and that firefox does not suport active x. so yeah the print control would appear to be IE only. however you might be able to find a plugin for firefox that would allow you to run active x|||

Actually, the Microsoft documentation says certain things do not work in non-IE browsers, but the print button is not one of them.

Honest to God, I think Microsoft is just lazy or arrogant sometimes. It's not THAT hard to get printing from a non-IE browser to work. I was able to do it when I had my own custom page to display Reporting Service reports. If I can do it, surely the well-paid gurus at Microsoft can do it!

Grrrrr....I may have to put in code to generate my old custom stuff for non-IE browsers. My custom page does not work as well as the Report Viewer control, so I really would rather not do that.

|||Yeah, it's because they implemented it as an ActiveX control, which is totally the wrong direction to be heading. Microsoft should be moving away from ActiveX since other browsers don't support it (although I think there is a plug-in that allows Firefox to use at least some ActiveX controls). Plus it is a major focal point for security exploits and bugs, it would be better if it was removed from the browser environment entirely.

Hi Cynthia - I know what you are feeling. I moved over most of my clients to LGX Report (www.logixml) because of that issue and similar ones. For most of my clients IE only is not a solution that works. The Logi product is zero footprint and integrates easily with ASP.NET applications. It's also free, but I have one client who needed more features available on their paid version.

Good luck

Hi,

In my case the print icon is not displayed in the report viewer viewed through the IE.(in the client server)

But able to see the same in our local network

|||Probably security. You are probably allowed to use ActiveX controls in a trusted site (your network), but outside of that the security restrictions prevent using ActiveX controls. If they add your site to the trusted sites in the IE security area, they will likely be able to see the print button. Just my hunch.

Print button generates hugh spooled print files

Hi!
We are currently using a different third party tool to print out pdf-files
generated from SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services. We are a fairly large
international cooperation and have a centralized citrix it environment with
different band width to different places in the world. This makes the print
file size critical.
Because there havenâ't been any really good ways to print out reports before
sp2 we have hoped a lot of the sp2 print functionality. Now itâ's installed in
our test enviromnet and we are pretty disappointed.
It seems like the reports are converted to tiff-format and then printed and
the print file size is huge. We tested to print out a report with six pages
(A4-format) with different techniques and this is the result when it comes to
spooled print file sizes:
1. Using RS print button (14.1 MB)
2. Exporting to TIFF-format from RS and than print (14 MB)
3. Exporting to PDF-format and print with gsprint (ghostscript) using a
windows generic print driver (1.43 MB)
4. Exporting to PDF-format and print with gsprint (ghostscript) using a
print driver specialized for the current printer, hp laserjet (852 KB)
5. Exporting to PDF-format and print with acrobat reader (531 KB)
I have a couple of questions regarding this:
1. Is this right? Is the report converted to TIFF-format when pressing the
print button and is it right that the spooled print file should be this large
and in that case why is it done in this way?
2. Is there any work around for this? Is there any way to get a smaller file?
3. Is this the way it will be implemented in SQL Server 2005 as well?
Regards,
/MattiasHi Mattias,
I also noticed the problem and posted a while back but not got a reply yet
(we too also use Citrix and need to address the bandwidth issue!).

Previous Month Name in Report Header

I'm failry new to Reporting Services and I need to put the name of the
previous month into the Report Header. For example I need it to look like
"November 2004..." How would I go about getting this into the Report Header.
Thanks in advance,
BJYOu can use: =Now().AddMonths(-1)
If you want to format it to display the way you showed, you can use:
=format(Now().AddMonths(-1), "MMMM dd, yyyy)

I have a date being passed in and I need to display the previous month of
that date. So in a text box I put this
=datetime.parameter!startdate.addmonths(-1).tostring("MMMM")
but get only errors.
Has anyone had to do this before?

Previewing a URL image in Reporting Services

Hi all
I need to place an image from a web site onto a RS report. Is it possible to
do this in SRS 2000?
IE. http://<servername>/<directory>/<image.jpg> and render the image on the
report?
Thanks in advance
GeorgeRephrasing the question:
I've assigned the image control value to be a database field containing a
valid URL however I'm getting a red cross when trying to display the report.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

Or if you drag the image control from toolbox, you will see 4 options for
image source, you need to choose Image Source = "Web" which the 4th option.
Then click next and leave the URL empty...totally tempty... then click
finish. Then you can edit the value of the image to the database field...
which is full valid url.

Preview/Print/Save reports

Hi

I have done many Reports using SQL 2005 Reporting Services and I can access them by:

http://localhost/Reports

In my ASP.NET application, I have 3 buttons:

Preview, Print and Save

If the user clicks on Preview the report is displayed

if the user clicks on Print,the report is sent automatically to the printer

if the user clicks on Save,the report is Exported in Pdf format to C:/

Can anyone give me some tutorials on how to manage Reports(.rdc) from ASP.NET

Hi,

From your description, it seems that you are wondering how to embed your report in ASP.Net application, right?

Generally, you can add a report viewer to your aspx page. You can follow the steps below to add your report viewer.

Open the Toolbox window. From the Data group, drag a ReportViewer control onto the page.

If it is not already open, open the ReportViewer Tasks smart tag panel by clicking the triangle in the upper right corner of the ReportViewer control on the Web page. In the Choose Report box, select the fully qualified file name for Report.rdlc.

When you select a report, instances of data sources used in the report are created automatically. Code is generated to instantiate each DataTable (and its DataSet container) and an ObjectDataSource control corresponding to each data source used in the report. This data source control is configured automatically.

And then, you can preview and print reports from reportviewer in the following way:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms251693(VS.80).aspx

For more information on embed a report in your website, see:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252123(VS.80).aspx

Thanks.

Preview only returning one record of report

I'm new to reporting services so I assume this is a stupid question however here it goes.

I created a report that will produce a simple customer invoice. I use a stored procedure to return the data. When I run the dataset in the data section it returns 5 records. When I run the report in preview mode it only returns the first record of data in the report. I did notice that when I drag and drop the dataset fields into a report it appends the record with "First(Fields!..." I assume that this will only return the first record which it appears to do. When I remove the "First" it only returns the last record in the report. How do I return all 5 of the records in the preview pane. The paging section in the preview pane in all scenerios always says 1of1 with the next page arrow grayed out.

Thanks in advance..

Hi,

use tables in stead of text boxes to visualize tabular data.

Cheers,

Yani

|||

I don't want tabular data.

I want Name, Address, City State Zip of customer #1 on Page 1 Followed by detail (I use tabular data here) for that customer

Name, Address, City State Zip of customer #2 on Page 2 Followed by detail for that customer

All I get is Customet #1 (Or #5 if I remove the first stated in the original question..)

Etc..

|||

Okay,

did u try setting up all controls related to a customer into aListControl.

The contained info by a List Control is repeated for reach data row, this way you could achieve your need.

Cheers

|||

I'm totally lost at your suggestion??

I want to produce 5 invoices.

The Stored procedure returns data for those 5 invoices.( Name, address, city, state, zip etc..)

The report should return 5 pages with a customer invoice on each page so I can print them.

I'm not sure where a list control come into play here.

|||

If You don't want ur report in a tabular form then you will have to use list control.Drop textboxes into

the list control .

|||

Thank you,

I think I got it now.

One additional question I have with Formatting and Printing. Is there any type of formatting control for printing. In my research so far It appears that printing directly from the control is not an option. For now I will print to a PDF and then print. The problem I have is the PDF is creating what appears to be about a 1" margin on the page. I need the reports to print with about a .25" margin. Is there any place to control this. I will be doing checks next and the positiong will become more critical.

Thanks in advance.

Go to Report Menu->Report properties -> Layout Tab.

I think this will help.

May

preview layout diferent than server layout

i am using reporting serveces :
i created a DataExtension to get a dataset's value in the report as an
xml input file (this works)
1. i am designing the report using this dataset's values and some
calculated expressions like "runningvalue" everything works fine in
the preview button but when the report is called from my c#
application the "runningvalue" is not being calculated while all the
other data is calculated.
2. the data in my report table is in groups were some groups must be
desplayed others hidden ,acccording to the xml values, as well as some
tables must be displayed otheres hidden in the preview button of the
report this works but also when the report is called from my c#
application all the tables and the groups are displaued which MUST NOT
HAPPEN
what can i do to fix this?
pls help
i need it urgently and i have been working on it for like a lot
by the way,
this is how i am calling the render: from my c# application :
proxyParameters[0] = new STB.testlab02.ParameterValue();
proxyParameters[0].Name = "DataSource";
//System.Data.DataSet dsetReport = new System.Data.DataSet();
DataSet dsReportMO = new DataSet();
dsReportMO.ReadXml("c:\\DataExt\\dsReport.xml");//dsReportMO.GetXml();
proxyParameters[0].Value = dsReportMO.GetXml();
// Build device info based on the start page
deviceInfo = String.Format(@."<DeviceInfo><OutputFormat>{0}</OutputFormat></DeviceInfo>",
"emf");
//Exectute the report and get page count.
try
{
// Renders the first page of the report and returns streamIDs for
// subsequent pages

Preview error

Hi,
I'm trying to use Reporting Services, I have installed the client component on my computer (Win 2K pro sp4) and I try to start to design a new report. The data source is a SQL Server developer edition Sp3 installed on the same computer.
All works fine until I try to preview the report using the preview tab from the designer. I received this message "command 'view.output' not available.
My Visual Studio version is EA enghlish version. I have installed the RS SP1 with the same results.
Anyone can help me ?
Thank's in advance and I apologize for my poor englishDo you have any add-ins installed? Can you select View\Other Windows\Output
from the View menu? What happens if you open the VS Command Window, and type
"View.Output" ?

Yes I can select View\Other Windows\Output from the View menu.
If I open the VS Command Windows and type View.Output is not recognized as command.

Do you think that the problem may be that I use VS EA in eghlish on a Windows 2000 Pro Italian machine ?

Preview a Report in Design Mode (VS 2005)

I am working with SQL Server Reporting Services and Visual Studio .Net 2005 Beta 2. In VS 2003 you could preview a report in design mode by clicking on the preview tab. There is no such tab in 2005 Beta 2. Does anyone know how to preview a report in design mode? Thanks.When you are using the Report Controls in local mode (embedded), there is no preview since your application is responsible for creating the data set to bind into the control. You will need to execute your application to preview.

Designer preview is only present in report server mode.

Prevent users from browsing the reporting server site?

Dear MSDN!
Are there some way to prevent users from browsing the reporting server site?
The reason for this is that we want to access the reports on the reporting
services from our own website with POST parameters to the reports.
Thanks in advance!You should be able to control access via IIS and Active Directory.

I haven't done this but it is worth a try. Create a new role. Allow it to
view reports only (i.e. don't give it View Folders rights). Try assigning a
user to that role and see if it does as you want.

Your suggestion did not work. A user can still use the URL to the report and
browse it.

There is no way around the URL working for the user to view a specific
report. Or at least not without a whole lot of work. If you implement forms
authentication and then in your app you use a virtual user to view the
report then you could prevent this.
Note that if the goal is that only certain users should see a particular
report that is easy or if a user should only see certain data, that is also
easy.
In the latter case use the global variable User!UserID and have your data us
that user id to only present data that user should see.
